The Dream-Land (Encounter Generator)
An encounter generator usable with any old-school fantasy roleplaying game.
By a route obscure and lonely,
Haunted by ill angels only,
Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT,
On a black throne reigns uptight,
I have reached these lands but newly
From an ultimate dim Thule—
From a wild weird clime that lieth, sublime,
Out of SPACE—Out of TIME.
From Dream-Land by Edgar Allen Poe
Dream-Lands are pocket dimensions created by powerful Wizards. They are created for many reasons. Some use them as a test of their magical acumen. Some use them as a place of rest and refuge. Some use Dream-Lands to protect their fortunes from prying fingers. A Dream-Land takes up a tiny space in the real world, but inside can exist a large pocket of space beyond the limits of anything in the real world.
Dream-Lands are not infinite. In fact, some are quite small. The magic involved is similar to the creation of Portable Holes or Bags of Holding, but it is much more potent. They are literally alternate planes of existence. They are very different from the prime material plane, and each one is unique. Each Dream-Land reflects the personality of the Wizard that created it (henceforth referred to as the Architect). Unlike many spells, once the Dream-Land has been created, it will not cease to exist when the Architect does.
Most Dream-Lands have a physical portal. These portals in the material plane are not immediately obvious but can be detected using the same rules for detecting a secret door. Some require the casting of a Detect Magic spell. Some are triggered accidently. Regardless of how you find it, entering a Dream-Land through a portal is said to feel like being submerged in cool, dense water
